In my great grandfather's diary, he expounded on his grandfather, John
Stuart (my 3d great grandfather), for about 6 pages. He told the story
of John's migration from Virginia to Quincy, Illinois through Iowa. According
to the diary, John Stuart was born in Greenbrier (could now be Monroe),
VA (now WV) on June 5, 1810 and died October 27, 1888. I verified that
information at the courthouse. He also said that John's parents were George
Stuart and Christina Holsapple. I haven't been able to verify that connection
through primary records. Therefore, my confidence wavers. The FamilySearch
database (Mormon Church) files show a William Stuart born about 1810 to
George and Christina. It doesn't acknowledge a John. I do know that John's
middle initial was W, which might be William. Since no further information
was given on William in the FamilySearch website, I assume the submitter
has no support for William. Therefore, is that son John or William? I
would appreciate hearing from anyone researching this line. Thank you.

Does anyone have information on the marriage of John McMULLEN to Mary
BAKER in the 1770s? Also the birth of their son James McMullen around
1790s who married Evaline HOWARD ca 1834. Evaline's father William Howard

Can anyone tell me about the Royal Oak Field just outside Union? I have
a poem written by James Pitzer in about 1908 regarding the massive Royal
Oak tree for which the field was named & supposedly cut down in one
day by my ggggrandfather, Joshua Hall. In Oren Morten's "History
of Monroe County", he also said there was a poem written about it
by Anna B. Gwinn. I would also like to know where the Methodist Episcopal
Church South is located near or in Union. Thanks!

I am researching a Ruth Elkins Skaggs who was born circa 1728 and later
married John Skaggs circa 1743. John Skaggs was the sone of James Skaggs
who was the son of Thomas Skaggs who was the sone of Busell Skaggs. Ruth
Elkins and John Skaggs had the following children: 1) Zachariah Skaggs
born 1746 2) Charles Skaggs born 1750 3) Rebecca Skaggs born 1751 4) Femaleone
Skaggs born 1753 5) John Skaggs born 1754 Monroe County, VA 6) Rachel
Skaggs born 1760. She married William Lester 3/26/2786 in Montgomery County,
Va Story has it that Ruth was captured by Indians and given to a Indian
chief in NC. She escaped and returned to VA. She met and married a John
Bishop and had more children. I am looking for more info on Ruth Elkins,
her family, etc. Presumably she was captured in the Monroe County, VA
area. Her daughter Rachel Skaggs took the skaggs name but is supposed
to be by the Indian. A marriage record for her and John Bishop would really
help and also why did she leave John Skaggs and did he remarry? He died
1829. Any help greatly appreciated.

I have the record of marriage for my ggg grandparents, Sarah (Sallie)
Moss and Jesse Butcher, which occurred in Monroe Co., on July 20, 1822.
They almost immediately began migrating west, because their first child,
William, was born in Ohio in 1824. I have been unable to determine any
ancestry for both Sarah and Jesse, and am hoping someone recognizes these
names, and can help. We estimate from census records that Sarah was born
in approximately 1805, and that Jesse was born in 1800. Jesse died in
Wisconsin in 1851, subsequently, Sarah remarried and died in Wisconsin
in 1879. Cindy Wood
