My great-grandmother (Marianna GALANTI) married my Great-grandfather (Antonio DELL'ORSO) in Davey, WV in the early 1900's. They had several Children including my grandmother Posquina DELLORSO who was born in 1912. Most of her family remained in Canebrake, WV. One of my grandmother's brothers (Tony DELLORSO) owned a bar in Canebrake. One of her brother's (Augustine DELLORSO) still lives in Canebrake / Berwin. I am looking for any information on either family.

Otho M. Cartwright, Jr. - summer@ramlink.net - Moses CARWRIGHT came to Logan Co. after 1830, with his wife Clarisa (Clara) MURPHY, they were married in Madison Indiana. Their children were Thomas, Jane, William, Letty, Lewis and Barary. Moses lived and owned property in the Wyoming and McDowell Conties of VA, now WV. Would like to find more information on this side of the family, have information to share with them. Any info will be appreciated.

Jerry Rose - grose@swva.net - ROSE/MOSS/PERSINGER - I am looking for information regarding my grandfather, Thomas Wesley ROSE born 08 May 1882 and died 03 Jul 1943 in Monroe Co, WV. He was married 08 Mar 1923 in Peterstown, Monroe Co., WV to Ella Mae PERSINGER born 31 Jan 1898, Ella was the daughter of William PERSINGER and Rosa MOSS. However, I suspect that Thomas was married prior to his marriage with Ella. He had the following children from the first marriage: Foster, Nettie (married a BLACKBURN), Hattie (married a SMALLWOOD), Emmett, Minnie (married a BAILEY), Leonard. The following children he shared with Ella: Mary b 1919, Florence b 1921, Cecil b 1923, Helen b 1930, Effie JoAnn b 1932, Paul b 1934, Ernest b 1939, and Carl b 1942. I understand that Effie JoAnn was born in Hemphill, WV on 25 May 1932. I do not have any information regarding Thomas' parents, sibs, or previous wife. Nor do I have any information regarding the Persingers. Can anyone help me? Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated as I have hit a dead end with my grandfather.

In the 1860's had relatives living in McDowell Co. The Post Office was Gilea Spring, the 13th District. The family was John and Jane MOUNTS DANIELS. Their children were Peggy, Elizabeth, Micheal, Nancy Polly and John. Micheal fought in the Civil War and was killed. The family then moved to Lawrence Co. KY Don't know which side he fought on. The family later received word that the grave where he was buried was being moved. No one seems to have any information on it. How would I find out which side he fought on and where the grave is located?

Thomas was born 08 May 1883 and was married to a Betsy. Thomas and Betsey had the following children: Foster, Nettie, Hattie, Minnie (who married a BAILEY), and Leonard. I don't know what happened to Betsy. Thomas later married Ella Mar PERSINGER b 31 January 1898. Ella and Thomas had the following children: Emmett, Mary Elizabeth, Florence,
Cecil, Boots, Helen, Paul, Ernest, Carl and Effie JoAnn. JoAnn was born 25 May 1932 in Hemphill. I don't know where the others were born. JoAnn married Marvin "Pete" NEELY. Thomas' son "Boots" claims that Thomas immigrated from Ireland to WV. I have not been able to prove this yet. I am awaiting Thomas' death certificate for more information. Can anyone give me ANY information on this family? I have met with a dead end at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

C. Mitchem - WPKA88A@aol.com - Looking for info on Shorten SMITH who lived in Tazewell Co. VA, died 1836, according to will probate. He left everything to his 2 year old granddaughter, Rebecca MITCHEM (MITCHUM, MEACHAM, MEACHUM) who was the daughter of his daughter, Joanna, who married Jedediah MITCHEM. According to early land deeds, Shorten was married to a Lavinia but we don't know when or where married or her last name. We do know that Shorten served in Rev. War from Dutchess Co. NY from 1781-83 and let out at Snake Hill (NY or NY??). He received bounty land in Onondaga Co. NY and sold it. Then shows up purchasing land in Botetourt Co. VA about 1785/6. The children we know of for sure are: Joanna, Vinney (Lavinia), Isaiah, Shorten and possibly a William and Joseph. (They get married in Tazewell about same time period as othter children.) The granddaughter, Rebecca, married Henderson ELSWICK about 1854 in Tazewell.

I know he was born in Va in 1830's, married Susannah MULLINS, served with the CSA, moved to McDowell Co., sometime after the war and before 1880. They had eight children: Noah, Henry; James, Thomas, John, William, Samuel, Charlotte (Lottie). Moses died in 1898 and is buried at Shortridge Cem., Garland, McDowell Co., WV. I am looking for any information on Ben Benjamin KELLEY and his wife Isabell Mullins KELLEY. Ben was born in Kentucky in 1888 and married Isabell on June 20, 1908. Belle as she was called had several children when she and Ben married. Andrew MULIINS born 1900, William MULIINS born 1904, Rebecca MULIINS born 1906, Whitt MULIINS born 1907. Ben and Belle had Marvin KELLEY born 1911, James KELLEY born 1914 and Ella Mae KELLEY born 1909 and Cas KELLEY born 1917. Benjamin and Isabell left Buchanan County and moved to the Bradshaw area of McDowell County. PHIBBS, SMITH, BOTTORFF: I would like information regarding a Washington Franklin Arthur Sebastian PHIBBS (b. 1885 birthplace unknown) and family. Around 1914 he married widow Susie (b. c. 1890) Emma SMITH (maiden name - widowed from James ? around 1910 -- James was killed in a drowning accident in the region.) Susie Smiths great-grandfather, James SMITH, apparently lived in the region, and was a slave-owner. Washington and Susie's first child, Naida Leoma PHIBBS, was born in Hemphill (or Welch,) McDowell County on Nov 10, 1914, according to an affidavit issued in San Diego, California in 1944. The family moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, around 1920. Washington had at least two brothers, John and Calvin, though their birthplaces are unknown. Calvin was later a magistrate in Twin Falls. Susie bore four children by her first husband: Annie, Fred, Caroline, and Cabotla (all born in the area -- Fred was killed as a child by a train while playing on railroad tracks.) Susie bore three children by her second husband: Naida L., Rupert, and Howard Phibbs. Naida married Clarence Wayne BOTTORFF (of the Berks Co., PA Batdorf lineage and b. Dec 25, 1917 in Kansas) on Sept 24, 1937, in Idaho. Any information regarding the families would be greatly appreciated.

His wife Laurinds LOVINGS HUDGENS B 26 Nov 1867. d 17 May 1929 in Ronoke Vas. He built the first House in Welch, Captian Welch lived with his family when he came to Welch in 1892. Their third son John Welch was named for Captian Welch by his request. They had the following children. first names only HUDGENS, ROBERT, T. B 1889, LAURA FRANCES,(first white child born in welch) I was told McDowell co. ?NORA, B 22 APRIL 1893, CLIFTON(PAT) b 18 march 1895. ADA B 7 MARCH 1897, WILEIY BUCK B 22 NOV 1898, CARL PAUL B 10 JULY 1906. WALTER FRANKLIN B 7 MARCH 1900. I find no record of their existance in McDowell co. Since he was among if not the first white settler I feel there should be some thing some where. I have some more info that may be of inportance.

Neale Clifton - nkcliftn@norfolk.infi.net - I was born in Welch and my grandfather William Thomas FARLEY, and his wife, Lucy Clay FARLEY, lived on a mountain close to Brown's Creek - just about by themselves. WT was a former school teacher, deputy sheriff and truant officer in the area. He had to leave in 1954 due to dynamiting in the area which depleted his water supply - a spring about a million feet up hill from his house. At age 75 he was still mining coal for fuel, had no electricity and as I said, he did not have tap water. I haven't been to the area in quite a few years. It seems to me the population of Welch was about 5,000 at that time. I was born in Grace Hospital. I would like to get in touch with someone who might have known my family.
