Dr. Bennett's grave was moved from the Bennett-Knopp
Cemetery located on Lock -- Road leading off WV 62 and reinterred
in Pioneer Cemetery in 1985. This is the 14-foot gravestone that
was also moved by the 3664th Maintenance Co., NDDS of the Point
Pleasant National Guard Armory. Dr. Jesse Bennett , a Mason County
physician is known for performing the first Caesarean section
in the county. It has been certified that this was the first Caesarean
section performed in the world. Surgeon of 2nd WVA Regiment War
of 1812; a juror for Aaron Burr trial; participated in formation
of Mason County in 1804 and served in the Virginia Legislature
1805-1809. Dr. Bennett is buried in a glass top coffin with diamond
shirt studs in his shirt.
