Benjamin Manning, Son of Benjamin Manning, Jr.

Submitted by Frank Manning.

A pension claim of Nancy Riggle, widow of Jacob Riggle, is significant, genealogically, for the Manning family. It includes a general affidavit by Elizabeth Stewart Manning, wife of Lewis Manning who died in the Civil War. Elizabeth resided in Cameron. The affidavit reads:

“I have been personally acquainted with the claimant for many years. Knew her before she was married to Benjamin Manning her first husband. Her said named husband Benjamin Manning was a brother of my husband. I was at his house when he lay sick a short time before his death and I know about his death but can not give the exact date but it was in March and I think 1847. I have lived neighbor to her and actually acquainted with her last husband also Jacob Riggle and saw his funeral pass. I was not able to be out. He died 26th day of November 1892. I did last see the claimant married to Jacob Riggle but know they were married and lived together as man and wife until his death. She has not remarried since his death. Jacob Riggle was not married until he married claimant.

The affidavit was made 10 December 1892.

The Benjamin listed in the affidavit is the son of Benjamin Junior and his first wife. The Benjamin listed in the affidavit had a brother Lewis who was by Benjamin Junior and his second wife Jerusha. Benjamin and Lewis had different mothers so they were half brothers.
