The school began as Fairmont Normal School, then became Fairmont State Teachers College, then Fairmont State College, and finally Fairmont State University.

The Mound was not published for the years 1920, 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1934, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947 and 2010.
