I am tracing some of the WETZEL's of WV and found a D.D.WETZEL residing in Jackson Co. during the 1860 census. I am looking for Dennis D. b. abt. 1831, the son of Jacob WETZEL and Eve SMITH. I know of seven children but suspect that there are more as I am missing several years between children. The children that I have are: Lewis S. (1824); Rebecca J. (1835); George Jackson (1837); Margaret M. (1839); Jefferson P. (1842); and Albert Robert L. (1848). According to a newspaper article, son Lewis is quoted as saying that Jacob's father was George who fought in 1812 War, and that he was related to Lewis WETZEL of frontier fame. (I have not been able to confirm this in any fashion)

I would greatly appreciate any information you can give me in my search. George Wetzel

WRIGHT, Benjamin (1755-1829) and his descendants

Looking for information on all of descendants of Benjamin WRIGHT and Sarah CASTO. Benjamin and Sarah moved to what is now the Cottageville area of Jackson County between 1799 and 1802 where Benjamin built a water powered mill on land that he received from his mother, Sarah YARD WRIGHT PROVANCE, in her will of 1796. This mill was used not only to grind grain but also able to saw logs floated down Mill Creek to the site of the mill.

I am searching for all descendents of Benjamin and Sarch in hopes of creating a more complete history of one of the earliest families to settle in the area that is now Jackson County.

Some of the family names besides WRIGHT, include EVANS, BIBBEE, SHIVELY, LONG, BROWN, PICKENS, HARPOLD, WARD, BEAT(T)Y, PRATT and REED. These are just a few of the surnames and I will welcome any information on these or other surnames that are linked to the descendents of Benjamin WRIGHT.

Information can be sent to my email address or to my postal address at Rt. 2 Box 36-A, Sandyville, WV 25275

I am trying to obtain information on Theodore Simpson CONNER of Jackson County, WV. The son of Joseph CONNER, born 21 May 1829, from Marshall County and Nancy Jane MCCULLOUGH, married on 13 Aug 1860 in Wetzell County, WV. I believe they had five children: Theodore, John, James, Minnie and Livina.

Theodore Simpson CONNER married Mary "Mariah" BLACK (born c1863 and died c1943). Mary "Mariah" BLACK was the daughter of Robert A. BLACK and Catherine KERNS and is listed in both the 1870 and 1880 census. Mary "Mariah" married Greason Barnhart on 25 Nov 1888 in Jackson County. Mariah later married ____ WALTERS. She is buried in the Drift Run Cemetery with her last husband - WALTERS.

Theodore and Mariah "Mary" CONNER had at least two children, the oldest was Nancy "Catherine" Jane, born c1884, who married Alvan W. "Bar" MCCAULEY on 5 Dec 1901 in Jackson County. Both are buried in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, WV.

Theodore Simpson CONNER died before Homer Worthington CONNER was born, 18 Mar 1886, so Mariah "Mary" (BLACK) CONNER lived with her parents for sometime. Thus, when Homer Worthington CONNER married Orena Jane HOUCHEN, born 16 Nov 1908 in Jackson County, they were married with the last name of BLACK, 1 Nov 1908, in Jackson County, WV.

They are listed in the 1920 census as H.W. and Orena CONNER and two sons R.C. (Rollie Connis) and C.R. (Clifford Ralph). They later moved from Jackson County to Mineral Wells, Wood County, WV, where several of their grandchildren still live. "Connis" CONNER married first Euliah E. WAYBRIGHT and after her death Dora May HARTER. "Cliff" CONNER married Beulah Viola POSTEN.

Job COOPER: Disappeared without a trace!

Job COOPER, listed on some census records as a shoemaker from Virginia, was born in 1823. On March 5, 1846, he married Catharine SIMONS in Morgan county, Ohio. She was born in 1821 in Virginia.

In the 1850 census record for Enoch township, Monroe county, Ohio, his name was spelled Jobe COOPER. They had two children, Valentine COOPER, age 4, and Henry COOPER, age 1.

In the 1860 census for Enoch township, Noble (formerly Monroe) county, Ohio, Job and Catharine had 6 children: Valentine, age 12; Henry J, age 10; Marilla, age 9; Emily, age 7; Samuel D, age 6; and Mary E, age 3.

On August 27, 1864, Job enlisted in Company G, 176th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a waggoner. The record shows he was mustered out at Camp Chase.

The 1870 census record for Enoch township, Noble county, shows Catharine COOPER with 5 of the children. Job is not listed! The child not listed is Valentine, who was married to Jane Ellen HART on March 4, 1869, and is living in a separate household in Noble county.

By 1880, Valentine, Marilla, and Samuel have moved to Jackson county, West Virginia. I can find no trace of Job, Catharine, Henry J, or Emily. Mary E may have moved to Iowa, but I have not confirmed this. Valentine and Jane lived in Jackson county, and had 4 children. Marilla married Thomas BALIS in Jackson county, and had at least one child. Samuel David COOPER, my great grandfather, married Sarah BUCHANNON on July 17, 1877 in Jackson county.

I am seeking the following information: Who were the parents of Job COOPER and Catharine SIMONS? Where was JOB after 1864? When did he die and where is he buried? Where did Catharine, Henry, Emily, and Mary go after 1870?

Please respond to Connie Cooper Lasley, e-mail elasley@comsource.net Snail mail: Connie Lasley RR# 3 Box 136A Owensville, IN 47665

I can't thank everyone enough who has helped me with sorting out the FOGLESONG Family of the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia. I am reposting my query to see if anyone can help me locate information on Catherine FOGLESONG, b. Sept 22, 1796 and her husband John Mayes (Mays). They were married in Bath County Virginia in January 1818. The marriage bond was issued on January 18, 1818 and the return was filed on January 23, 1818. The majority of Catherine's brothers and sisters moved in the 1820's to Mason County and Jackson County in what is West Virginia today. Catherine, also had a sister Elizabeth FOGLESONG who married Jacob Minich in Bath County, VA in April 1819. The marriage bond was issued on April 5, 1819. Her father George FOGLESONG consented for her, and her brother John FOGLESONG was a witness. I have been unable to locate information on them in Bath County or Mason. I have not really focused on Jackson County. Any information would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Christopher Dunn

I am researching the FOGLESONG Family of Virginia/West Virginia. Specifically, I am researching George and Mary (nee SWARTZ) FOGLESONG of Bath County Virginia and their children who moved to Greenbrier, Mason, and Jackson Counties. I have extensive information on George FOGLESONG, their son, and the majority of his brother's and sister's. However, I am missing information on John FOGLESONG who married Mary Fox in Bath County in 1819. A John FOGLESONG appears on the 1830 census in the same area as George his brother. Also, I am looking for information on James FOGLESONG who married Mary Woodell of Jackson County. They were married in 1836 in Mason. Any information regarding any FOGLESONG would be much appreciated. Thank you. Christopher Dunn

I would appreciate any information on the family lines of William OLDHAM, Eliza HOOVER,Elizabeth SMITH, and Mary Estella PIPER.

Eliza Hoover OLDHAM was born on 1 Jan 1802 to John and Esther HOOVER. She married William OLDHAM in Pocahontas County circa 1824.

I do not know William OLDHAM's antecedents. John and Eliza OLDHAM lived in Pocahontas County and had two children Nancy M (1825) and William K (24 Feb 1828). Following William's death in March 1828, Eliza HOOVER Oldham married William MORRISON and moved to Braxton County in 1829. The MORRISON family including the two OLDHAM children moved to Jackson County. In 1849 William K OLDHAM left his mother and stepfather's home and moved back to Pocahontas County where he had inherited land from his father William.

William K. OLDHAM married Sarah KINNISON in Pocahontas County in 1855. Sarah died in 1859. William K. OLDHAM sold his Pocahontas County land and bought a farm in Jackson County. In 1861 William K married Elizabeth SMITH of Pocahontas County. William K and Elizabeth resided in Jackson County on William K's land. Elizabeth and William K had six children: Owen, Oley O, James, Odenna P, William T (6 October 1875) and Joseph S.

William T OLDHAM married Mary Estella PIPER (born 1885) and moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia where William T jointly owned Parsons Sauders Department Store with his brother Odenna P. OLDHAM. Mary Estella PIPER's family lived for a while in Pittsburg, Pa. W.T., as he was known, eventually sold his share of the department store and opened a shoe store known as "Oldhams." William T and Mary had four children: May, Grace, Edith and Billy. They lived on Horner Avenue behind the Washington Irving High School.

William T and Mary Estella OLDHAM were my maternal grandparents.
