Samuel Moore, age 29, mustered in 14 Oct 1861 in Company "K" 5th West Virginia Infantry at Ceredo, Wayne County, (W) Virginia; mustered out when term of service expired. The 5th Infantry was consolidated with the 9th Infantry in Oct/Nov 1864 and the regiment was designated the 1st West Virginia Veteran Infantry. Samuel is listed in the 1864 West Virginia Adjutant General's Report in Company "K" 5th Infantry: "Mustered in Oct 14, 1861. - Not mustered out." The company had mustered out 3 Oct 1864. He continued briefly as Company "K" was merging with the 9th to become the 1st Veteran Infantry. However, he was soon discharged, according to the record of Company "K" 1st Veteran Infantry in the 1864 AG Report. His Service Record from the National Archives gives 6 Nov 1864 as the date of muster out.
The physical description of Samuel Moore, as stated in his pension application: (1) 5'7", dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. (2) 5'6", fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair. (3) 5'5", blue eyes, dark complexion, lite hair [hair & complexion reversed?].
Samuel Moore, born 9 (or 18) Oct 1833 in Lawrence County, Ohio, was the son of Abram Moore, born in SC and May/Mae (unknown). He married Anna Gillen 16 Aug 1855 at Lawrence County, Ohio. Their children were Abraham, Miles, Deborah, Adeline, Andrew, Alfred, Lawson, Mary, Hattie and Cora.
The pension file of Samuel Moore, Certificate #497.849, provides the postwar locations of the Moore family. For the most part, Samuel resided in Lawrence County but did live in Cabell County, West Virginia and in Putnam County, West Virginia.
Samuel Moore died 10 July 1914 at Chesapeake, Lawrence County, Ohio.
